Newborn Basics

Newborn Sleep Patterns (0-8 Weeks)

Understanding Noah's Sleep Rhythm

Newborns don't follow predictable sleep cycles yet. Their tiny bodies wake frequently for feeding, comfort, and closeness. This is normal and health—Noah's brain grows rapidly during sleep.

Most newborns sleep 14-17 hours in a 24-hour period, but only in short stretches.

What Sleep Looks Like Right Now

  • 2-3 hour sleep cycles
  • Feeding expected throughout day and night
  • Lots of light sleep (active sleep)
  • Twitching, grunting, or smiling during sleep
  • Occasional random awakenings

This isn't poor sleep—this is newborn sleep.

Active Sleep vs. Quiet Sleep

Active Sleep

Noah may:

  • Wiggle
  • Make faces
  • Kick gently
  • Breathe faster
  • Make little noises

This is normal and important for brain development.

Quiet Sleep

  • Deep, still, peacefule
  • Longer stretches
  • Harder to wake

Noah will gradually shift toward more quiet sleep as he grows.

How Abby Can Support Good Sleep

  • Keep the room dim and calm at night
  • Feed and burp gently before laying Noah down
  • Use soothing sounds or shushing
  • Follow Noah's natural cues—yawning, staring, fussiness

Abby doesn't need a strict schedule yet. Flexibility is best in these early weeks.

Encouragement for Abby

Even when the nights feel long, Noah is learning, growing, and adjusting beautifully. Every time Abby comforts him, he feels safe—this is the foundation of healthy sleep as he matures.
