Newborn Basics

Safe Sleep Guidelines (ABC: Alone, Back, Crib)

Why Safe Sleep Matters

Safe sleep protects newborns while their bodies are still learning to regulate breathing and movement. Following a few simple guidelines creates a safe and peaceful space for Noah to rest.

The ABCs of Safe Sleep

A — Alone

No toys, pillows, stuffed animals, or loose blankets in the crib or bassinet.

Noah should have his own sleep space—even if that space is right next to Abby's bed.

B — Back

Always place Noah on his back to sleep.

This is the safest position for newborns.

C — Crib

Us a firm, flat mattress in a crib, bassinet, or play yard specifically designed for infants.

No couches, adult beds, or recliners.

Room Sharing is Encouraged

Abby can keep Noah's bassinet next to her bed.

This makes nighttime feedins easier and keeps him close while maintaining safety.

Swaddling and Sleep

Swaddling can help Noah feel secure, but:

  • Stop once he shows signs of rolling
  • Keep the swaddle snug around his body
  • Ensure hips can move naturally
  • Never place him face-down while swaddled

Safe Sleep Temperature

To reduce overheating:

  • Dress Noah lightly
  • Keep room temperature between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Avoid heavy blankets or hats during sleep

A cool, breathable environment is safest.

Encouragement for Abby

Abby is already creating such a loving, safe environment for Noah. Following simple sleep guidelines helps her rest easier knowing he's protected and comfortable as he dreams.
