Newborn Basics

What's Normal in the First 2 Weeks

The First Two Weeks Are a Big Adjustment

Noah is still getting used to life outside the womb—lights, sounds, feeding, and even breathing feel brand new to him. Abby may notice many things during these early days that seem unusual, but most of them are normal newborn behaviors.

These patterns show that Noah is growing exactly as he should.

Normal Newborn Behaviors

1. Sleepy but Wakes Frequently

Newborns can sleep up to 14-17 hours total but wake every 2-3 hours to feed.

2. Irregular Breathing

Pausing, fast breathing, or slow breaths are common while Noah's lungs adapt.

3. Sneezing, Hiccups, Grunts

All normal reflexes—not signs of sickness.

4. Small Birth Swelling

Swollen eyelids, puffy face, or tiny bumps on his nose (milia) are normal and temporary.

5. Skin Peeling

Noah's outer layer of skin sheds naturally in the first week.

Normal Feeding Patterns

  • Cluster feeding
  • Wanting to eat often
  • Falling asleep mid-feed
  • Spit-ups and small dribbles

Noah's tummy is learning how to process milk.

Normal Diapers

  • Black meconium in the first days
  • Transition to greenish stools
  • Mustard-yellow stools for breastfed babies
  • 5-6 wet diapers per day after the first week

These are healthy signs of feeding and digestion.

Normal Emotional Needs

Noah may want:

  • Constant holding
  • Skin-to-skin time
  • Comfort feeding
  • Reassurance through touch

He is not "spoiled"—he is bonding.

Encouragement for Abby

These early weeks can feel overwhelming, but Abby is doing beautifully. Every cuddle, feeding, and whispered reassurance helps Noah feel the safety and love he needs to thrive.
