Umbilical Cord Card

Why Umbilical Cord Car Is Important

Noah's umbilical stump will naturally dry out and fall off within 1-3 weeks. Keeping it clean and dry helps it heal quickly and prevents irritation.

This process is simple and gentle.

How to Care for the Umbilical Stump

1. Keep It Dry

  • Fold diapers down so they don't rub the stump
  • Avoid covering it with tight clothing
  • No tub baths until it falls off—only sponge baths

2. Keep It Clean

If pee or poop gets on it, clean gently with plain water and let it air-dry.

3. Don't Pull or Tug

Even if it looks "almost ready," let it fall of naturally.

What's Normal During Healing

  • A little bleeding at the base
  • Drying or shriveling
  • Light crusty appearance
  • Small amounts of yellowish discharge

These are normal as it separates.

When to Call the Pediatrician

Contact the doctor if Abby notices:

  • Foul smell
  • Red or warm skin around the stump
  • Continuous bleeding
  • Swelling or tenderness
  • Pus-like discharge

These can indicate infection, and early care keeps Noah safe.

Encouragement for Abby

Umbilical cord care can feel intimidating, but Abby is doing everything right. Noah's little belly will heal beautifully with her gentle attention—and soon she'll be able to enjoy those sweet tub baths with him.
